Server World Spawn Layouts: Build as You Go or Build before Launch

When I launched my server on CreeperHost, the only thing I had built was a brick wall with signs describing the rules. I figured I would just build features and services as they were needed. The result ended up with a very crowded world spawn location. My own estate was right next to the spawn location since that I was the only op. The world spawn and my estate merged into one location and the entire area became very laggy. The only solution I had was to just relocate myself to a new area and rebuild my estate.

In retrospect, I wish I had built everything first and then launched the server. I could have spread out things more – like increasing the distance between my custom villager town and the tele-station. It might not have prevented the lag but at least the spawn location wouldn’t have had things built on top of each other. The structure congestion is an eye sore that just flat out bugs me. Nothing is built within a unified theme.

I don’t think I’ve come across any tutorials or discussions about building world spawn locations. I’ve seen plenty of schematics of world spawns posted, but what about those that what to build something for themselves that fits the feel of theme they want to have for their server?

If I were to start my server over from scratch, the first thing I would do is decide and settle upon a theme that everything would be based on. Then I would chose a map style and seed that fits the theme. Once that is sorted out, I would then decide what services I wanted to provide, how many buildings I would need for them, and how I would lay them out before I began building.

If I don’t want villagers in the world spawn location, then I know my layout design doesn’t matter too terribly much as long as it’s straight forward and makes sense to the player. However, based upon observation of villager AI, these NPCs seem to be programed to favor the “center” of town. This means if you want villagers in your starting area, your center of town would better served as a large town square or park. This reduces the villagers’ tendency to cluster into one building at night since none of the buildings are designated as “center” of town. This isn’t 100%. This is just an observation I have made. I am not a programmer; I’m just an avid gamer who loves building NPC villager towns.

So to recap, in the event I were to start my server over from scratch I would go about it in a carefully pre-planned way and build it all before I opened it up to the players. I would try to make sure it was reasonably spread out so it wasn’t clustered on top of itself, but not so far apart that you need a teleport to travel between service buildings. I might even draw a map of the spawn location on paper before I began building. I would make sure everything matched a unified theme so the server has an identity that stands out from the rest.

They say hindsight is 20/20 and I think that’s true. We always tend to say “I should have…” or “I wish I had done it this way…”, etc. It’s not any different for running a server. Lots of learning as you go with this just like anything else. The best any of us can do is to learn from it and adjust accordingly – and naturally learn new lessons as a result.
