Tode’s Weekly Assessment #12

Spent most of this week at my parents. I’ve been having major difficulties waking up in the morning. Little Bear has too. Since deciding to move back in with my parents, my father has pushed for changing Little Bear’s bedtime back to 7:30pm or earlier. Yeah I could do that but it won’t change when he falls asleep. Only thing doing that will accomplish is turning bedtime into a war zone. On third day of listening to him harping on me about it I asked him if we were going to be fighting about it all the time. I told him that he IS right. My son DOES need more sleep but we can’t force that to happen. *sigh* I wish my father had learned that from raising me. All I had learned to do back as a kid was to quietly lay there, waiting for sleep to claim me. If I didn’t I would catch hell. That’s not making a kid sleep but rather training the kid to stay in bed and being anxious about sleep performance. It’s old school thinking. Stay in bed long enough you’ll fall sleep, but in truth it can be counter productive. It can actually produce sleep anxiety and make you stay awake longer. This is one point him and I will never see eye to eye on. The trick with Little Bear is to get him to be still long enough for the body to do it’s thing without him realizing that’s what you’re doing per say. If he knows it, he will fight you every step of the way. Why must bed time be turned into a war zone and how is that ever productive to sleep?
