- Got a phone call from the school about Little Bear’s behavior. The new principal agrees with me that the swearing and disruptiveness is most likely an attempt to get out of doing the work and be sent home. She told me that the only time she’ll send him home is if they’re short staffed and safety is a concern, but he won’t be sent home for swearing. Which right now, I’m given the impression is the problem. I told her I haven’t figured out how to break him of it. I have nothing against swearing as long as it’s used as one’s regular vocabulary, but that’s not what my son is doing. He’s doing it to be insulting, mean, and just to push people’s buttons. I’ve noticed he swears more often around the people that get upset than the people that ignore it. The principal did agree with me that it seems like the best route to take is negative reinforcement – as in you don’t reward the behavior with any kind of attention. The problem is, he uses swearing to be disruptive in class and during the extinction phase of a behavior, it tends to get worse before it gets better. And I think this is what we’re seeing right now. Last year he would get sent home just for using the word “bastard” but this year he’s dropping the “f-bomb” and all it’s getting him is detention in the room next to the office. I fear that he might try something else more extreme before too long.
