The Knight of Swords cautions you to watch your tongue.
Before you speak, ask yourself these three things first: Is it kind? Is necessary? Is it true?
If you can say yes to all three, then speak. If not, don’t. Words become swords that create wounds you cannot take back.
All knights want to help people, but every knight needs to understand that in order to help someone they cannot hurt that person. You don’t get to love them if you hurt them either. If you inflict pain upon someone, that person will run from you not toward you.
One of the easiest ways we inflict harm to others is in the things we say. Few people respond well to “tough love” and let’s be honest with ourselves on this one. How happy are any of us to receive it? I never understood why anyone would think it would go better on someone else.
So seriously, stop and think before you speak. Ask yourself:
- Is it kind?
- Is it necessary?
- Is it true?
If so, then speak. If not, then don’t. Because each time we cause harm with our words we burn away the bonds that bring us together. Over time as we continue to do this, we will find that we have separated ourselves from the people that matter to us and the bridge has been completely burned beyond repair.
It takes more work to build a new bridge between those we care about than it does to maintain the one that already exists.
