According to folk-lore, the New Moon and waxing phases are fertile and wet. This is the best time to set intentions, start goals, and launch projects. Meanwhile the Full Moon and waning phases, the tide recedes and thus things dry up. So this is a good time to thin, weed out, and prune.
Another New Moon is upon us and now is the time to clarify our intentions and solidify our commitments for the lunar month ahead. With today’s reading we will explore the energies of the Four Pillars of Wellness and our current point in the Journey of Life. In doing so we can take the time to consider what we do and don’t want in our lives and set the appropriate intentions and goals towards what we desire.

Trust Your Instincts
The Fool is about adventure and new beginnings.
This lunar cycle calls for the start of something fresh and new.
This could mean a new project, meeting new people, or taking up a class of some kind. It doesn’t have to be a huge thing like changing jobs or moving. Sometimes small shifts in our lives leads to bigger things later down the road. Trust your instincts and follow where they lead you.
Spiritual Needs – The Moon
Explore the Soul
The Moon represents the subconscious mind, the depths of the soul, and confrontation with illusions and the dark side.
Our spiritual needs right now is to go deep within and to take an honest hard look at who we really are and what we really desire. Even the parts of us that we don’t like need to be embraced and accepted. Until we can do that, we aren’t going to be whole and complete.
Spiritually delving deep within ourselves may very well be a new experience for many of us. And even if it’s not the first time for some of us, we’re being called to explore new aspects of ourselves.
Who are you, really? What makes you tick? What are you most afraid of right now and what makes your soul sing?
Emotional Needs – King of Wands
The King of Wands represents ideation, passion, and strong will put into action.
So there is an emotional need here to not just feel things, but to do things that align with the feelings. Emotion is energy in motion. Harness that energy and put it into motion. Move your body or create something to express your feelings.
Consider the many possibilities you could be expressing your emotions in productive, healthy, and creative ways. Is there something that resonates with you that you would like to try? A new art or craft? Music or dance?
What emotions are you avoiding, afraid of feeling, or ashamed of expressing?
What do you need to do in order for you reconcile with these emotions and integrate them with your sense of wholeness?
Mental Needs – Three of Swords
Accept the Truth
The Three of Swords represents dealing with a painful truth. Any time I see this card, I think of the saying I so often heard in church growing up that “Hell is knowing the truth too late.”
What is needed here is to simply accept the truth of things for what it is. The mind can agonize over it all day and forever, but unfortunately that’s not going to change anything.
Instead, focus on what needs to be learned from it and how best to proceed from this point forward.
Realizing the truth changes everything, doesn’t it? The question is, what are you going to do with it? With this revelation, a whole new path awaits you.
New choices. New unknowns. All this unfolds from knowing the truth.
You can choice to remain stuck struggling with it, or you can choose to embrace the adventure of moving forward with it. Explore the new possibilities that are born from it.
Often times the reason we struggle with the reality of the truth is due to cognitive dissonance.
Things we once believed to be true are now in conflict with what we are currently facing. Fear, grief, guilt, denial, anger, and shame can all come into play as we strive to come to terms with that conflict.
We need to be willing to dive deep into what we’re facing in order to come out into the light.
Pain is pain, regardless of the cause. The brain doesn’t know the difference.
Find ways to allow it to flow out of your system. Your emotions need to move and your struggle with the truth is also resistance against the pain you feel. Logically processing your thoughts is one way to keep feelings at bay.
Permit yourself to cry if you need to. As often as you need to. Write down your thoughts in whatever format that works for you. And then find something to do with that energy. Transmute it into something good. As many times as you need to until the pain is fully released.
Physical Needs – The Star
Relax into Your Physical Being
The Star represents serenity, hope, trust, generosity, and authenticity.
Physically what is needed here is to relax. Be gentle and kind to yourself.
The self-care industry today will try to sell you all kinds of products and services. Marketing will tell you if you’re not using this or if you’re not doing that, then you’re wrong.
Don’t listen to it. Listen to what you’re body needs right now. Honor it.
No one knows you better than you.
Which new methods of relaxation have you been meaning to try? What methods already work for you that you have been neglecting?
What new physical activities can you add to your daily routine to increase your sense of peace and hope? It can be something as simple as drinking a quiet cup of herbal tea before bed.
Sometimes it helps to be doing something physically relaxing as we reflect upon who we really are deep down inside. Whether this is taking a walk out in nature, gardening, writing while in a coffee shop, or sitting out on our front porch it doesn’t matter.
The point is that we carve out that time to spend with ourselves and become true friends, not just acquaintances, with who we are.
Doing activities that allow us to relax physically also reduces the emotional turbulence we experience.
We carry everything we feel in our bodies. Every emotion that we fail to process we end up storing somewhere physically. The reason for this is because each emotion is a biochemical signal sent across nerves between organs and muscles. This is why emotion is energy.
Since emotion is energy in motion, physical activity is perhaps one of the best ways to harness and release our feelings.
Relaxing physical activity also allows us to clear our mind. This is particularly useful when we are struggling to reconcile with a painful truth.
The mind needs rest and peace just as much as the body does. Your brain doesn’t need to be on the constant go all the time. Give it a break. Allow it room to breathe so to speak. Be kind and gentle with yourself.
Permit yourself to focus on happier things more often.
Expand with Grace and Ease
The Fool this lunar cycle calls upon you to trust your instincts and try something new as you journey upon your life path.
The Moon encourages you to delve deeper to explore the inner workings of your soul so that you can become better acquainted with yourself.
The King of Wands urges you to integrate your emotions by naming them, claiming them, allowing them to flow, and using them to create.
The Three of Swords reminds you to accept the truth for what it is in order to come to terms with the reality that you have right now.
The Star asks you to relax into your physical being in a way that works for you to release worries and tension.
