Here is this quarter’s self improvement tarot challenge. Read on for details!
This Quarter’s Reading
The purpose of this tarot reading is to take a look at this quarter of the year and see in what way we can challenge ourselves to do better in regards to our overall wellness. I ask you to approach this as a fun brainstorming session of possibilities rather than me prescribing a course of action to you. If it doesn’t resonate with you, then you are free to discard it entirely.
And again, in terms of wellness I want to point out that this applies to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the self. All four of these elements comprise the total sense of being and need to be taken care of in order to be well. As always, and I cannot stress this enough, be sure to speak to the appropriate professional before making changes to your care plan. This is especially true if the reading inspires a change in diet, exercise, supplements, or medications, or even raises a concern regarding to your health.
I’m not a specialist in any of these fields. My goal is to look at how to manage wellness in the presence and with the cooperation of your professional care team. Please keep this in mind when going over this reading.
Here is the image of this coming week’s reading.
The Challenge: The Emperor
The challenge at this time is to take charge of the direction you are going in life.
Monday Button’s position represents the challenge you need to be working on at this time. Thus, what you need to be working on right now is found within the Emperor.
The challenge at this time is to take charge of the direction you are going in life. The Emperor represents in many ways the ultimate authority and when it comes to knowing what is best for you, you are that authority. Only you can live with the consequences of the choices you make, whether they’re good, bad, or otherwise. So you may as well make the choices that you feel that will best move you forward.
The Lesson: Ten of Wands
The lesson at this time is knowing when to set the burdens down in order to rest as needed.
Grim Lee’s position represents what you need to be learning while working on your challenge. Therefore, your lesson at this time is found within the Ten of Wands.
The lesson at this time is knowing when to set the burdens down in order to rest as needed. Too often when we see this card it’s because we trying to take on or carry too much all at once. The really bad part about this is that our society treats exhaustion like a badge of honor of some kind when we really shouldn’t. Yes, we should work hard but not to the point of burn out and break down.
I keep saying this and will continue to day this: what good is it to work for the “good life” if you never give yourself the chance to enjoy it? I really wish I could remember where I first heard that because it truly struck a chord with me and I would like to give them proper credit. In any case, I feel the point is valid. It’s not a “good life” if you’ve worked yourself dead.
Are making sure that what you carry and the life you are leading is yours?
So when we look at these two cards together, it raises some important questions.
- Are you living a life you want?
- Are you moving towards a life you want?
- Are you doing the things that support the life you want?
- If not, what do you need to do to change?
Ultimately, only you can decide which burdens to carry and which ones to set down. Are making sure that what you carry and the life you are leading is yours?
The Inner Lie: The Lovers
At the very least, make sure you are building your long term happiness.
Murphy Law’s position represents the false belief you need to overcome while working on your challenge. The inner lie at this time is revealed within the Lovers.
In the Mythic Tarot, the Lovers card depicts the tale of the Judgement of Paris in Greek mythology. If you take nothing else away from that story, at least learn from it that you will never be able to make everyone happy. The moment you say yes to one thing is the moment you say no to all the other available options. That is just a fact of life. In that story of Paris, it would not have mattered which goddess he picked. A war still would have launched from it thanks to the two remaining goddesses.
And no matter how hard you try, even with the best of intentions, you will never be able to make everyone in your life happy all of the time. So at the very least, make sure you are building your long term happiness. Do not make the mistake of putting yourself on hold by sacrificing that just for the sake of someone else’s short term happiness believing that somehow it will pay off, because it won’t.
Personally? I still think Paris should have tried cutting the apple three ways and telling those ladies there was no possible way he could pick just one of them for they were all equally beautiful. But what do I know? Knowing his luck, it probably still would have offended them somehow.
The most important thing to keep in mind here is understanding the difference between a need and a want.
The most important thing to keep in mind here is understanding the difference between a need and a want. For example, being hungry is a need. This is not negotiable. What you eat and where you eat is a want. This is negotiable – for the most part since I realize some of us are just stuck with whatever we’ve got. Having appropriate clothing for the weather? That’s a need. Having a particular brand of clothing? That’s a want. Holding a safe space for your loved one when they are in crisis? That’s a need. Holding space for them to emotionally drive by on you? That’s a want.
If you try to meet every single want and need, you will bleed out. Be selective with wants. Be mindful about your own. Do your best to meet the needs of your nearest and dearest, but don’t neglect yours either. If you find yourself feeling resentful or burnt out, it’s a signal to you that you need to re-evaluate what you’re defining as needs and who you are allowing into your inner circle. Strengthen your boundaries if needed.
We need to understand that the people worth having in our lives are the ones that accept us for who we are and work cooperatively with us.
The desires and expectations of others, whether real or imagined, can easily overwhelm us. It’s very tempting to become a people pleaser out of the fear of rejection or abandonment. However, we need to understand that the people worth having in our lives are the ones that accept us for who we are and work cooperatively with us. It’s not going to be the kind of people that only accept or want a false representation of who we are.
Trying to control the thoughts and feelings of others will only result in killing your spirit.
What people think of you is none of your business. It really isn’t. Don’t bother trying to carry that burden. They will think whatever it is they’re going to think no matter what you decide to do. Whether it’s what they want you to do or not. They are going to think and feel whatever it is they want. You have zero control over that.
Because here’s the thing, in the image of the Mythic Tarot’s Lovers card that apple is the Chaos Apple from Eris. It will never matter what you do with that apple. I know I said earlier that Paris would have been better off trying to split it three ways but I also said that knowing his luck it still would have gone bad. This is why. You can’t control the chaos factor. There is so much that goes on behind the hearts and minds of others that we can never see. And it runs much deeper than whatever it is you’re doing in that moment.
For example, you and I both listen to the exact same song on the radio at the same time. How it makes you feel versus it makes me feel could be vastly different because of our life experiences. You can’t change that for me any more than I could change that for you. And neither one of us are wrong for it. How people feel about what you’re doing, or how you think and feel about things, often times is no different from this as hard as that might be to see it that way.
Trying to control the thoughts and feelings of others will only result in killing your spirit. Focus instead on what you need to be doing. That’s where your energy truly belongs.
The Wisdom: The World
Is your life well integrated?
Wise Toad’s position represents the wisdom to keep in mind as you work on your challenge. The wisdom you need at this time is found within the World.
List out the various aspects of your life and ask yourself if it’s all well integrated. Is everything coordinated in such a way that it moves smoothly for you? If not, what do you need to do for it to change so that it does?
You know what is and isn’t working for you in your life right now. Become your own advocate.
You know what is and isn’t working for you in your life right now. Become your own advocate. What do you need right now for things to be working for you? What is one thing you can start doing right now that would make the biggest improvement overall? That is where you need to start.
Do not over burden yourself. Know where your limits are and set boundaries around this.
How are you supposed to keep your life fully integrated and running smoothly if you are completely burnt out from carrying the burdens of others? You can’t. It’s not possible. Do not over burden yourself. Know where your limits are and set boundaries around this. This isn’t being selfish. This is being reasonable about your health and well being.
Surround yourself with people who want the authentic you, not with people who want just whatever it is you can provide in the moment.
Surround yourself with people who want the authentic you, not with people who want just whatever it is you can provide in the moment. When you buy a loaf of bread, you buy all the slices of the loaf. You don’t just pick some of the slices out that you want and leave the rest. The same is true for people. You get the whole person. So starting give the whole you. And if you feel like you can’t do that without losing friends, then it means you’ve got the wrong friends.
The only thing left for you to do here is to act upon what you need to be doing for you.
You know what kind of life it is you desire. You also know whether you are doing the things that support that life right now or not. You already know if you are moving forward or not. Regardless of what anyone else may think, you know what changes you really need to make or not make. The only thing left for you to do here is to act upon what you need to be doing for you.
